Serge makes a fashion statement in Round 2

Sir Justice Airwick GPO CBD takes orders for his Orange Baby chapeau at Maclagan Park during Round 2

There was much excitement at Maclagan Park in Swanbourne during Round 3 and not all of it related directly to all-terrain bocce. Yes, our perennial clothes horse, Sir Justice Airwick DOA NFR, had chosen Round 2 for the unveiling of his latest fashion piece, a very fetching orange “chapeau”, which he calls “Orange Baby”.

Serge conceded that he’s often associated with his famous Jar Jar Binks hat, named after the Star Wars character with similar flowing lines, but he insists that his new Orange Baby will set the world alight.

Serge even took time out to speak to the media and take orders for the Orange Baby from hat merchants around the world while play was under way.

As for the day’s play, some commentators suggested that Serge’s mind was perhaps not on his first game, perhaps because of the exciting product launch. Serge was the only player on the field for The Big LeBocce, as SuperMario was once again having his eyebrows tinted, and the depleted TBL was no match for Artificial Indifference, the latter prevailing 8-1.

Stormboy and RE were less successful in their other game, coming second (4-7) in their tussle with Go Flat Out – Or Buzz Off, but still holding a healthy for-against percentage after four games.

Serge had regained some composure and fared better in his other game, eclipsing The Brandy Bunch (Andy sans Brad), 8-3.

As with TBL, it was a day of mixed fortunes for Brandy Andy, as he managed to pip Barnballs 8-6.

It must be noted that Cannonball was awarded The Special Order of Merit on the day (but the presentation of his certificate has been delayed due to printing problems), as he played while still recovering from a nasty dog attack in the previous week. According to The Sunday Times, in “a largely unprovoked attack at a local cafe”, a chihuahua set upon Cannonball, sinking its fangs into his left knee, requiring some Mercurochrome and a Bandaid.

In a remarkable display of resilience, Cannonball and Barney did win their other game, dispatching Big Wheelers, 7-5.

Sadly for Big Wheelers, their 5-7 loss to Barnballs was the high point of their day, as they were were dismantled 1-7 by Motherchucker, who now sits unbeaten atop the ladder.
