When the AATBL players and spectators descended upon Lake Claremont in round two there were two main questions being asked:
- Will Better Than Charles live up to its name?
- Will Mark McGowan make good with his promise of ice-creams?
The answers that emerged were “Not this time” and “Yes”, respectively.
Round two was played in warm and sunny conditions, ideal weather for the consumption of ice-creams.
Yes, the Motherchucker v BTC game had been billed as a grudge match, and it proved to have the day’s equal-narrowest winning margin, with our Dear Leader prevailing by two points, 8-6.
Better Than Charles won its other game, eclipsing the Dukes of Normandy (SNHDT sans Stella) 7-3 in the Dukes’ only game of the round. That leaves the Dukes at 0-3 and at the bottom of the ladder pro tem, so things can only get better for them.
Motherchucker was less successful in his other game, a 1-7 drubbing at the hands of the Second Eleven (Reg and HRH Prince Andrew II, but no Cannonball).
Similarly, the Second Eleven did not have things all their own way, succumbing 5-7 to the Burley Hurlers (Barney and Serge, without Digger).
The Burley Hurlers had two wins on the day, as their other game saw them defeat Gonad 7-4.
Gonad’s other game, against Athletes For Life, gave Gonad his first win for the season, 7-4, and AFL its first loss.
