Noughts, nines and other numbers

The CBGBs vs Reg at Helston Park on 25 July 2021

The sixth round of the 2021 season, played at Helston Park in City Beach, saw an unusual mix of results. The last time a round had two results with a score of nine and two results with a score of nil was five years ago, on 31 July 2016 at Rottnest.

This time, both of the noughts were written beside the name of the Stingers (Barney flying solo, as Stella and Buzz Lightbeer were at a wellness retreat). If Barney had had more wellness and less retreat, he might not have lost 0-8 at the hands of Psychoceramics (Digger sans Brad and Serge) and 0-7 to Reg.

Reg was on fire, winning both his games, the other being a 7-5 victory over CBGBs (Cannonball and Banker, in the absence of Gonad).

Like RE, Motherchucker played only one game on the day, but Mochu went home chortling that he hadn’t lost a game, having prevailed over Two Fingers of Scotch, 9-5.

CBGBs had a day of mixed fortunes, eclipsing Rawalpindi Express 7-5.

At the other end of the day’s success spectrum, TFOS went home having lost 100% of their games, the other being a 5-7 loss to Big Pineapple.

The other result for BP would have earned him a silver medal at the Olympics, as he came second, 6-9, in his tussle against the psychoceramic Digger. As it turned out, his request for a medal of any kind was denied by the stewards and, upon review, by the Committee for Handling Stupid Requests.

Two home-and-away rounds to go.
