The final round of the home-and-away season unfolded in controversial circumstances on 17 September, with more games forfeited than played. With the Nomads and Heaven’s Door both failing to field a player, five games were forfeited and three games were played.
The Circus was delighted to cement the minor premiership with two 7:0 “victories” from forfeits.
Its other game was a much closer contest, with Mochu and Brad sneaking home 7:6 against lone Drone BP. Big Pineapple was bitterly disappointed that the Drones received no benefit from the forfeit festival. It might have been the tears in his eyes that held him back, as he lost the Drones’ other game 5:7 to Shibumi.
The Big Guns were also delighted recipients of two 7:0 forfeits, as they were thereby able to finish in third place and avoid the play-off for the Asti.
The Pot Shots (SuperMario playing solo in Digger’s absence) took one game by forfeit and beat Shibumi (Banker sans Reg) 7:6. So, the day’s games were either close contests or 7:0 forfeits.
Several commentators have called for a return to the proxy system. We shall see what changes the AGM brings.
