Winter in July

Digger wonders whether there is room on the mantelpiece for the Asti

The July round was played in wintry conditions in the park previously known as Lake Claremont or Butler’s Swamp.  Although each team had at least one player present, absent were SuperMario, Big Pineapple, Cannonball and Motherchucker.

Brad was adamant that Motherchucker was in Africa and not hiding nearby in the bushes. Opinion on social media as to where he really was seemed evenly divided. Believe what you will. Wherever he was, the Circus won both its games, eclipsing the Big Guns 8:2 and sneaking home 7:6 against lone Drone Barney.

Barney redeemed himself in the Drones’ other game, handing out a pantsing to Heaven’s Door (Serge on his own), that being only the season’s second 7:0 loss (excluding forfeits). Heaven’s Door did manage one win from three starts, as Serge beat the Nomads 7:3, but succumbed 6:7 to the Big Guns. The Big ‘Uns lost two of their three games, the other being a 4:8 defeat at the hands of Shibumi.

Though many bookies had Shibumi short-priced as the Asti recipient at the start of the season, it now sits in third place with two home-and-away rounds to play. Reg and Banker won both their games, the other being a percentage-boosting 8:2 win over the cellar-dwelling Pot Shots.

The Pot Shots (Digger flying solo) did manage one win, to provide a glimmer of light to the dank depths of the cellar. Although it was a close one, Digger’s 7:6 victory against the Nomads was sweeter for the fact that Gonad and Stormboy are perched atop the ladder.
