Down by the river

Gonad concentrates on his boot-scooting moves while Cannonball hurls a cod

On the 80th anniversary of the first vehicular crossing of the Golden Gate Bridge, the AATBL teams gathered on the shores of another noteworthy bay for Round 4 of the 2017 season. OK, so we had no beauty queens, no riot and nobody on roller skates, but there certainly were thrills aplenty at Matilda Bay.

Highlights included:

  • Heaven’s Door winning a game;
  • Motherchucker playing a successful shot;
  • Gonad showing us his boot-scooting moves; and
  • continued debate about the merits or otherwise of BP being known as “Hairy Canary”.

Yes, Heaven’s Door took one from two, beating the Circus 7:5 and losing a close one to the Nomads, 6:7. Serge, who did not play (as he was attending the National Flatulence Summit in Dubbo) spoke highly of his team-mate’s efforts after the game. “What? We were playing today? I hope the dopey bastard turned up”, he said.

The Circus won one of its other two games, losing 1:7 to the Drones, but prevailing 7:4 over the Pot Shots. The result was also 7:4 in the Pot Shots’ other game, but that was a win over the Big Guns.

The Big Guns also had a day of mixed fortunes, as they managed to beat Shibumi 7:3.

Some commentators have suggested that Shibumi should focus less on the completion of their team dance and more on the skills of the game itself. In his post-game press conference, Reg defended Banker’s right to put his energies into the team’s choreography. “Look, we have the best team song and you know that Banker’s always been a song and dance man. He might be old, but that’s perhaps a reason for the press to show him some respect. If he wants to dance, I support him.”

Despite the dancing, Shibumi managed to win a game, eclipsing the Drones, 7:5. The Drones took only one victory from their three starts, as the Nomads also dispatched them, 8:5.
