From fourth to first – The Jolly Rogers take 2015

No cliches here: Rawalpindi Express and The Rock take the novel step of kissing the Grand Bocce trophy.

The Ball Boys headed into the 2015 finals as minor premiers and short-priced favourites. The other ladder positions, in descending order were iBocce, the Flying Pigs, the Jolly Rogers, GBU and the Nomads.

The finals were played on a mild but sunny afternoon at Helston Park in City Beach. The Pigs were flying without Digger, who was in prison again for not paying parking fines. Gonad the Nomad couldn’t attend as he had a clash with his Latin dance class. Serge was a late scratching, after calling to explain that he had caught a body part in his fly. The other absentee was Buzz Lightbeer, Ball Boy in absentia, who was still in Chicago, where he is working to introduce all-terrain bocce to the septics.

In the last two seasons, the minor premier has gone on to take home the silverware, but this time it was not to be. It all went according to script for the Ball Boys in their first game, dispatching iBocce 7:2, and placing the Boys straight into the grand final.

In the second game, the third-placed Flying Pigs used their two-point head-start to see off the Nomads, 7:3, thereby sending the Nomads to the Asti play-off. The Jolly Rogers took a one-point head-start into their third round clash with GBU and used it to their advantage, the result being 7:5 to the Jolly Rogers, with GBU thereby heading for the Asti play-off.

GBU (SuperMario and Stella playing without Serge) then took on the Nomads (Cannonball, sans Gonad) and GBU was victorious, handing the Far Call Asti Spumante to the Nomads, 7:2.

The Rock’s cod straddles the jack, pushing the two iBocce balls away.

In the semis, the Flying Pigs started with a bonus point, but the Jolly Rogers were too good, prevailing 7:3. The closest game of the day was the preliminary final between iBocce and the on-a-roll Jolly Rogers. The game was marked by a shot-of-the-century effort from The Rock. The iBocce lads were controlling the end with their cods touching either side of the jack. RE explained to his team-mate, The Rock, that all he had to do was place his last ball on top of the jack, from 5m onto firm sand, thereby displacing the other two. To the amazement of the gallery, that was exactly what he did and the Jolly Rogers then held on to win by that solitary point, which was enough to get into the grand final.

The grand final saw the Jolly Rogers too strong for the Ball Boys, taking the Grand Bocce title 7:3. This was RE’s third straight grand final win, as he played in the Flying Pigs’ 2013 and 2014 victories.

The Rock received the Stolichnaya Trophy for shot of the day and he again took out the Munted Reindeer Trophy for best dressed in the finals.
